About the sculpture

Description of the Artwork:

"Horse Restrained by a Groom" (Guillaume Coustou; bronze sculpture).

A brown-patinated bronze sculpture after Guillaume Coustou, signed on the right side of the base. This piece is one of the Horses of Marly. Originally, these Carrara marble sculptures, created between 1740 and 1745, adorned the watering troughs of the Château de Marly. They are now exhibited at the Louvre.

Guillaume Coustou (1677–1746) came from a renowned family of sculptors. Accepted into the Royal Academy of Painting and Sculpture in 1703, he went on to become the King's sculptor, as well as a professor, rector, and eventually director of the Academy. He is credited with numerous monumental sculptures in and around Paris.

His major works can be found at Versailles, the Trianon, the Marly Park, and other sites.

Period: Late 19th century.
